Chance was born to a mother with hepatitis (there was a 50/50 chance that she'd develop it, too) and reared in isolation. Chance's severe lack of socialization created problems when she first arrived at the sanctuary. She was afraid of everything and didn't like other chimps around her. Regis was her first true friend. Annie also had a positive influence on Chance. Months after the chimps moved in, Chance was spotted lying in Annie's bed with her, something only mothers and children do in the wild. Chance loves playing "hockey" with volunteers and getting wet from the water hose. She will slide around on the slippery floor and will play for hours with buckets full of warm soapy water.
