Petra was born in the lab and rejected by her mother almost immediately. Her involvement in research began when she was eight months old and lasted until she was retired at age nine. When Petra first arrived at the sanctuary her social skills were lacking, due mostly to her early withdrawal from the lab's social group. Now, Petra is making up for lost time and has many chimp friends including Chance, Binky and Jethro. The nicest change in Petra since her arrival has been her freckly face. At first sunken and troubled, Petra's face has begun to revert to that of a youngster again.
